Wild Lilac (ceanothus) are shrubs and trees native to north America, most of which are found in California coastal foothills to inland areas. Most species occur in California. Many hybrids of this popular plant species are available in nurseries for use in home landscapes. They are available as low growing spreading plants, small to medium shrubs, and as small trees. They adapt well in low water use landscapes particularly as accent plants and when used as ground cover plants on slopes and banks. Wild Lilac exhibits moderate to fast growth when young. Most develop a profusion of blue flower clusters in spring that vary in depth depending on the species, while a few varieties develop white flower clusters. Pictured above is Ceanothus 'Ray Hartman', a hybrid that grows to up to 15' high and 10' wide when mature. These plants require less water and maintenance than non-native varieties, and are also valued for their ability to improve soil fertility. These plants are adapted to our climate and varying soil conditions, and a must have when developing a native California landscape design style.
